Yantras may be defined as geometrical figures that represent the basic energies. Yantra iterally means "support" and "instrument". Just as every elementary geometrical figure, a straight line, a square, a cross or a triangle etc., has a symbolic value corresponding to the basic notions, similarly, the Yantras symbolise one or the other power or energy.Yantras sometimes supplement the power of mantras and are often as strong as the mantras themselves. Yantras can be defined as visual mantras. In other words Yantras are the graphic representations of Mantras. Yantras can be drawn, engraved or painted on paper, amulet, pendant, on a door, wall, floor, gold, silver, copper, crystal, birch, bone and Vishnu stone (shalagrama).
Certain numbers, set of symbols and even sometime mantras were used to draw yantras. It can be three dimensional. Yantras are usually designed so that the eye is carried into the center, and very often they are symmetrical.
The yantra is often used to gain power, wealth, remain healthy, nullify the ill effects of planets, bring good luck. There is lot more that can do yantra. Its area is very vast. It is an effective tool for contemplation, concentration and meditation. It protect us from the evil forces.
The Yantra is like a microcosmic picture of the MACROCOSM. It is a focusing point and an outer and inner doorway. The Yantras are often focused on a specific deity and so. by tuning into the different Yantras you can tap into certain deities or creative force centers in the universe.
